On Saturday, February 9, the Raiders team hit the road to bring a new program to Midlothian, Virginia, sharing a drum corps experience with fifty young performers from eleven area school programs. Clover Hill High School hosted the Raiders Drum Corps’ world-class instructional staff in an all-day, interactive session where students took their brass, percussion, and color guard skills to the next level.

The day began with an introduction from the Raiders, immediately followed by a session with the corps’ visual staff focusing on movement. The remainder of the day included sessions in brass, percussion, and color guard, with the day broken up with discussions about drum corps, ice-breaking activities, and a pizza lunch.

Raiders alumna drum major, Katie Beasley, led a select group in sessions designed to focus on conducting and leadership.

At the end of the day, parents and friends were invited to return for our drum corps show-and-tell, where each section performed a sample of the skills learned throughout the event.

Lauren Moffatt, program coordinator for the 2019 Raiders Drum Corps, observed, “It was exciting to see the level of the students’ engagement and how enthusiastic they were to learn new things. The staff was down-to-earth and gave great feedback. It was fun to watch the students leave their comfort zones and become better performers by immediately applying new information. We’d love to see many of these promising performers again soon!”

Brianna Gatch, director of the Clover Hill High School band, shared, “It was wonderful to expose my students to what drum corps is all about by giving them a taste of each element of the program. Students were exposed to calisthenics, dance, flag technique, brass technique, percussion technique, and visual technique in a matter of seven hours.”

Thank you to Brianna Gatch and Clover Hill High School for hosting this first-ever Drum Corps Experience Day. The Raiders Drum Corps is looking forward to bringing more of these events to different locations around the country. These events will serve as a great way to introduce the Raiders to a national audience as well as to spot talent and interest for our programs.

The next audition camp for the 2019 Raiders Drum Corps is this weekend, Friday, February 15 through 17, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
